3D Mammography: Get the whole picture
Screenings save lives.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced technology that creates multiple thin images of the breast. These “ thin slices” allow our specialized breast Radiologists to view the breast tissue more clearly and identify abnormalities more accurately. The patient experiences very little difference when having a 3D mammogram. The imaging equipment and positioning are similar to that of a conventional 2D mammogram. The real difference between the two procedures is the amount and detail of information available to the Radiologist. 3D Mammography is especially recommended for women with dense breast tissue, which can obscure suspicious abnormalities.

The enhanced precision of 3D mammography is beneficial to all patients, regardless of density, but can be especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue which can obscure suspicious abnormalities. The radiation dose is below the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Mammography Qualifications Standards Act requirement. Our FDA-certified machine is tested annually to ensure that it meets this standard.

– 3D Mammography Increases Cancer Detection and Reduces False Alarms

– 3D mammography finds more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary callbacks, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

When 3D mammography is used, the study found:

41% increase in invasive cancers detected

15% decrease in callbacks for false alarms

29% increase in the detection of all breast cancers

First in Colorado, First in Care

Invision Sally Jobe was the first breast center in Colorado to offer 3D mammography as part of an early clinical trial of tomosynthesis in 2009.

In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved tomosynthesis in combination with standard digital mammography for breast cancer screening. Invision Sally Jobe’s breast radiologists remain the region’s foremost experts on this technology.

“The study we co-authored in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirms what we already know: 3D mammography finds more of the invasive, important cancers we want found and saves more women the anxiety and cost of having additional workups. Most importantly, it saves lives.” said Dr. Lora Barke, medical director of the Invision Sally Jobe Breast Network.

Quality, Compassionate Care from Colorado’s 3D Mammography Experts Invision Sally Jobe, an American College of Radiology (ACR) Breast Center of Excellence, proudly offers 3D mammography exams performed by caring, experienced technologists in a warm and welcoming environment.
