Taking care of your health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and the people who rely on you. June is Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of routine care and early detection. Being proactive about your health can lead to earlier detection of conditions, more effective treatment, and better long-term outcomes. Radiology plays a key role in that proactive care, offering powerful tools to help monitor and maintain your health at every stage of life.
Here are some important radiology exams that support men’s health across different life stages:
1. CT for Lung Cancer Screening
Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in men. A lung cancer screening CT scan is recommended for men ages 50 to 77 who have at least a 20 pack-year history of smoking, or current smoker or one who has quit smoking within the last 15 years. This fast, non-invasive scan can detect lung cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
2. Prostate MRI
If you’ve had elevated PSA (prostate-specific antigen) levels or a suspicious digital rectal exam, your doctor may recommend a prostate MRI. This non-invasive test provides highly detailed images of the prostate and can help determine whether a biopsy or further treatment is needed.
3. Testicular Ultrasound
For men experiencing pain, swelling, or a lump in the testicles, ultrasound is the go-to imaging test. It can help diagnose a range of conditions—from benign cysts to testicular torsion or even cancer—and is quick, painless, and free of radiation.
4. DEXA Scan (Bone Density Test)
While often associated with women, osteoporosis can affect men too—especially after age 70 or if you have risk factors like long-term steroid use, low testosterone, or a history of fractures. A DEXA scan checks bone density and helps assess your risk for future fractures.
5. Cardiac Calcium Scoring (CT Heart Scan)
Heart disease remains a top health concern for men, particularly over the age of 45. A cardiac calcium scoring scan measures the amount of calcified plaque in your coronary arteries, offering insight into your risk of heart attack and helping guide prevention strategies.
