Breast Imaging at Invision Sally Jobe: What to Expect and How We Support You

It’s perfectly normal to feel a little nervous before a mammogram.

Whether it’s your very first breast imaging appointment or simply your first in a while, you may have questions about what the experience will be like, how long it will take, or what happens if we find something unexpected.

At Invision Sally Jobe, we believe that knowing what to expect helps put your mind at ease. From your first appointment through any follow-up care you may need, our experienced breast imaging team works hard to make every visit comfortable, convenient, and reassuring.

Before you arrive

On the day of your appointment, avoid wearing deodorant, powders, lotions, or perfumes on your underarms or breasts, as these products can sometimes appear on mammogram images. Wearing a two-piece outfit makes changing for your exam easier.

If you’ve had mammograms at another imaging center, let us know. Our radiologists compare your previous studies with your new images to identify normal changes and spot anything new more confidently.

During your appointment

Your visit is typically shorter than many women expect.

A specially trained mammography technologist explains each step of the exam, answers your questions, and positions you carefully to capture the clearest possible images.

During the mammogram, the technologist briefly compresses each breast. While the compression may feel uncomfortable for a few moments, it plays an important role in producing high-quality images while using the lowest possible radiation dose.

At Invision Sally Jobe, 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is our standard screening technology. As the imaging arm moves across your breast, it captures multiple images from different angles. 

A computer reconstructs those images into thin slices, giving our radiologists a detailed, layer-by-layer view of the breast.

After your exam

Once your imaging is complete, your role is finished, but ours is just beginning.

One of our fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologists carefully reviews your images, looking for even subtle changes that deserve closer attention.

After completing that review, we send your results to both you and your healthcare provider so you can discuss any recommended next steps together.

If we recommend more imaging

Getting a call to return after a screening mammogram can sound alarming, but fortunately, it usually isn’t.

In many cases, the radiologist simply wants a closer look at an area that wasn’t completely clear on the initial images. Most women who return for additional breast imaging do not receive a cancer diagnosis.

If you need additional evaluation, we may recommend a diagnostic mammogram, a breast ultrasound, or another specialized imaging study to gather more information before reaching a final assessment.
