What a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Can Tell You About Your Bursitis
If a joint suddenly feels swollen, stiff, or painful with movement, bursitis may be the reason. Here’s how a musculoskeletal ultrasound can reveal inflammation that may not be obvious during a physical exam.

A swollen, tender joint can make even simple movements uncomfortable. If the pain starts gradually or worsens with activity, bursitis may be part of the problem. Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, imaging is often helpful in confirming what is happening inside the joint.

At Invision Sally Jobe, we provide advanced diagnostic imaging for patients throughout the Denver metropolitan area and Colorado Springs.

One of the tools we frequently use to evaluate soft tissue injuries and inflammation is musculoskeletal ultrasound. Here’s how it can help diagnose bursitis.

What bursitis is and why it causes pain

Inside many of your joints are small fluid-filled sacs called bursae. These sacs act like tiny cushions between bones, tendons, and muscles, helping tissues glide smoothly during movement. When one of these bursae becomes irritated or inflamed, the condition is called bursitis.

Bursitis often develops when a joint experiences repeated pressure, overuse, or direct injury. It commonly affects the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Symptoms usually include swelling, tenderness, stiffness, and pain that worsens when the joint moves or when pressure is applied.

While bursitis can sometimes improve with rest and conservative care, persistent symptoms often require imaging to confirm the diagnosis and determine the best next step.

Why you may need imaging for bursitis

Joint pain can have many causes. Tendon injuries, ligament sprains, arthritis, and bursitis can produce very similar symptoms. A physical exam is often the first step in evaluation, but imaging can help confirm what’s happening inside the joint.

This is where musculoskeletal ultrasound can be especially helpful. It allows radiologists to see the soft tissues around a joint in real time, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bursae.

At Invision Sally Jobe, we often use musculoskeletal ultrasound to evaluate conditions such as bursitis, tendon injuries, ligament sprains, and nerve entrapment.

How musculoskeletal ultrasound works

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures beneath the skin. We place a small handheld device called a transducer against your skin and move it gently over the area being examined.

The sound waves bounce off tissues and return to the transducer, which converts those signals into detailed images of the joint and surrounding soft tissues.

Because the images appear in real time, radiologists can observe how structures move during the exam. This dynamic capability can be particularly helpful when evaluating joints that are painful during certain motions.

What ultrasound can reveal about bursitis

Healthy bursae are very small and often difficult to see on imaging. When bursitis develops, the bursa becomes enlarged and fills with excess fluid.

Ultrasound can show several signs that suggest bursitis, including:

  • Enlargement of the bursa with fluid buildup
  • Thickening of the bursal lining
  • Swelling in the surrounding soft tissues
  • Increased blood flow associated with inflammation

Seeing these changes helps radiologists confirm the presence of bursitis and identify its location.

Why ultrasound is especially useful for joint problems

Musculoskeletal ultrasound offers several advantages for evaluating conditions such as bursitis.

First, it provides detailed images of soft tissues that we can’t see well on standard X-rays. Second, it allows radiologists to examine structures as the joint moves, revealing problems that may not be obvious when the joint is still.

Ultrasound can also help guide procedures such as joint or bursa injections by allowing physicians to see the needle's exact location in real time.

For many patients, the exam is quick and comfortable.
