What to Expect at Your First Mammogram: A Guide for Women 40+
If you’ve recently turned 40, you may be thinking about your first mammogram. While the idea can feel a little intimidating, knowing what to expect – and where to go – can help you feel more prepared and empowered to take this important step in protecting

A mammogram is one of the most effective tools available to detect breast cancer early, before you can feel a lump or notice any changes. At Invision Sally Jobe, we’re proud to offer comprehensive, compassionate breast imaging services to help women over 40 stay on top of their health with confidence.

Why you should start mammograms at 40

Leading medical organizations, including the American College of Radiology and the American Cancer Society, recommend that women begin annual screening mammograms at age 40. If you have certain risk factors—such as a family history of breast cancer or genetic predisposition—you may need to begin screenings earlier.

Mammograms don’t prevent cancer, but they do catch it early when it’s easiest to treat. In fact, early detection through mammography has been shown to boost five-year survival rates to over 95%. Starting regular screenings at 40 is a proven way to protect your long-term health.

What is a screening mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that takes digital images of your breast tissue to look for any signs of abnormalities. At Invision Sally Jobe, our expert technologists use state-of-the-art imaging equipment to ensure clarity and accuracy with every scan.

If it’s your first mammogram, it also serves as your baseline — a reference image for your future screenings. Having a baseline helps radiologists identify any subtle changes in breast tissue that might occur over time.

What to expect during the appointment

Here’s a quick look at what happens during your mammogram:

  • You'll stand in front of the imaging machine while a technologist positions your breast on a flat platform.
  • A paddle gently compresses your breast to spread the tissue evenly. This may feel uncomfortable but lasts only a few seconds.
  • The technologist takes two images of each breast.
  • The full screening typically takes about 10 minutes.

If additional images are needed or if you’re undergoing a diagnostic mammogram, your appointment may take closer to 30 minutes.

Afterward, you can return to your normal routine immediately—no downtime required.
